You are growing into consciousness, and my wish for you is that you feel no need to constrict yourself to make other people comfortable.”
― Ta-Nehisi Coates, Between the World and Me’
I believe that sometimes society unfairly imposes rules that can be restrictive and frustrating. These rules can sometimes be grounded in our insecurities, fears, and prejudgments. Many “isms” of society-, ageism, racism, elitism- confine us. Sometimes we may live lives not worthy of the people that we truly can be. We need to get uneasy, restless, and uncomfortable. Take the time to face the absolute darkest skeleton in your closet. Be ok with having moments where your shine brings awkward silences. Understand that people won’t “get it” or “get you”. Accept the fact that advocating for yourself may rattle cages. Nevertheless, don’t be tempted to adjust yourself to fit a mold of life that is shaped by unreasonable constrictions.

How do you respond to this? I’d love to know. Comment
